Which would you buy.
Both are AWD European sedans, Both look great, prices compared to mileage are about the same. One is two years newer, but one has a propeller on the front. The Beamer also has an unfair advantage b/c it can be had with a 6MT.
Personally I'd pick the Volvo on looks alone. Plus I love those "floating" needles on the tach, and speeedo. and it has moar powah(slightly).
pics from G.I.S. cuz I wanted better ones than the dealership ones from Autotrader.

BMW. But I do love Volvos. However the BMW would be a better performer and for mods.

Easy! The Volvo
I love the styling a hell of a lot more, I like the value more. The interior is better. And it doesnt make you seem snobby for owning one.

E90 BMW any day of the week. I'm biased because I have one, but they are amazing. Truly one of the best "modern" BMW's. 335i is also easy to modify and the soft xDrive suspension is easily remedied.

I would be tempted to go Volvo since the BMW stigma is something I truly dislike. I am not saying that if you have them, you are an asshat. But so many true horrid people have them I still would feel a bit skeptical. Id go for Volvo if it was THAT BMW. I dont like it being AWD since I live near the beach, and I couldnt live with it knowing I couldve bought a manual. Oh, and the Volvo is downright sexy.

I live in a Wisconsin and have a rwd BMW.
I also have a Jeep that I drive in the winter.

I live in Minnesota. I have found AWD/4x4 an unnecessary expenditure. I have driven mostly RWD vehicles with success. My current DD is a 2wd Silverado.

If you are looking for performance, BMW by far. But if you worry about your image go with the Volvo.

I like to think of the 335xi as a gentleman's Evo. and the funniest thing is it's actually lighter than a EvoX.

oh that makes sense too. Honestly these two cars came up while thinking of what car I'd buy for the wife with around 30k. Unlike me she would rather have one newer car than two(or four, or six) older ones. She also wouldn't care if a car was RWD or AWD or FWD in the summer, but she does want AWD for the winter. So buying here one really nice AWD car to have all year round makes more sense.

It is really easy to drive RWD in the snow on modern cars, because so many have LSD. At least my truck does anyway.

Yeah that totally makes sense. Most people only want 1 car. I'm definitely the silly one.
I'd pick the BMW. I'm sure it's just better to drive.

it's so much less convenient though. I drove a 4x2 Cherokee a few weeks last winter and while it wasn't to bad and was actually tons of fun, there was one or two times it just would clime a hill that even my Civic wouldn't have bat an eye at.

My car has an open diff but the 50/50 weight distribution helps.

I would love to actually drive them side by side. The Volvo claims to have the same HP, and 25 more ft/lbs, and the curb weights are about the same, but I'm sure despite that the BMW's suspension, and AWD system is much more driver oriented.

My first car, an S10, had zero nannies (and terrible weight distribution 'cause truck) so I really learned how to drive in winter with that.

I'm sure in a petal to the floor setting the BMW is better, but I bet just point a-b, or lazy Sunday drive the Volvo is a more pleasant place to be.

Exactly!! I'd go for a RWD model though because RWD + some good snow tires or even great all seasons with some careful driving work well in my area during winter time.

This. Counter-steer just becomes second nature. I've only had RWD cars my whole life (which has been spent above the Mason Dixon and mostly in Minnesota) until very recently. I got my first AWD car a month ago, and I now live in Texas.. go figure

Personal opinion, which means it's more important than yours, I'd rather have rwd with snow tires than awd with all seasons.

I'd go with the Volvo. That's a fwd car someone was decent enough to grant awd. The BMW is a rwd car someone cursed by turning into awd.

Volvo no question. When was the last time you saw a S60 R-Design? Now when was the last time you saw a 335? Exactly. Plus the Volvo is awesome to drive and great to live with.

I don't think I've ever seen an R-Design(stupid name BTW) but there is an S60 this color that I see at least once a week on my home town. I love it. I drool over it much more than any non M 3 series.

That's my favorite-gen 3-series but at those asking prices, the Volvo is a better deal. Plus, Volvos are incredibly stress-relieving cars to be in...tough to describe, but you won't not notice this.
If you gotta have one car to do everything, the S60 is the way to go.

BMW for sure. With new Volvo reliability the BM might even be cheaper to maintain. And I personally dont like the styling of most new Volvos...Now my old 740...that one was a looker :)

BMW, and I don't have to think twice about it.
Rear-biased AWD vs. FWD-based AWD.
BMW is available with a 6-speed manual (major points)
The BMW interior is much more appealing to me (especially in this case without the iDrive hump!) Plus I never really liked the headlamp design on that generation of S60. Kinda goofy IMHO. Throw some sport suspension upgrades and a set of snows on the 3, and you've got my ideal 4-season DD.

after watching a few review vids i'm a little sad. The Volvo a 40-50,000 dollar "sports" sedan in 2014(still the same trans for the last 4 years or so) still has a sluchbox auto with no paddle shifters.

This guy is great to watch.
I think Volvo used to have better looking stuff but somehow their design & r&d departments got lazy. I think they peaked maybe 8-10 years ago. For the money, might as well buy the actual luxury brand.

He does do some great reviews and he is funny. Plus he actually talks about the annoying things, and let downs of the car, not just how great it is. Nothing worse than annoying car review host that does nothing but talk about how great every single car is. Looking at you motorweek.
